Meeting maori culture

Whakarewarewa village is a maori village open for tourists, it’s a living village, a site where maoris have lived for many years.

A guided tour takes us around the village and we see how they cook food in steam ovens built on the hot earth.

Hot water and steam is all around. We see traditional maori dances including the Haka dance and poi dance and grab some hangi cooked meals.

Hangi is when you cook the food in ovens above the steams from the ground. Very tasty!

Weather is grey and rainy so we hop in our fantastic KEA camper and take off for Waikite hot springs. Scenic drive through beautiful landscape and hot springs are perfect for frozen adults and children looking for a swim. The springs are nicely built with 12 different pools so you never feel its crowded. Temperature varies from 35 – 45 degrees. We try all the different pools before dinner, and Klara and Pernilla manage a second bath before bedtime.

Nice and warm
